Water Pathfinders Resources

Government Skills Australia (GSA) is pleased to announce the release of new promotional materials addressing recruitment issues within the water industry as part of the ‘Pathways program’ funded by DEEWR.

The water industry to date is experiencing skill shortages across a broad range of workforce occupations. Industry is seeing the impact of new technologies, an ageing workforce and lack of capacity for training delivery that requires action at both state and national levels in order to improve the current state.

These materials highlight the many and varied pathways into and within the Water industry, with a focus on providing recruitment strategies targeting in particular Indigenous Australians and women who have traditionally been less well represented.

The complete suite of materials includes:

Water Pathways Chart – A poster aimed at school and VET students outlining various job roles available in the water industry.

Waiting for an opportunity to surface? – A booklet of case studies focusing on women and Indigenous workers providing pathways into the water industry.

Recruitment and Retention: Utilising untapped resources – Various strategies and models for good practice recruitment.

Waiting for an Opportunity to surface? – 2 DVD’s promoting women and Indigenous people in the water industry respectively.

New guide for careers in government and community safety!

Government Skills Australia (GSA) is pleased to announce the release of a new career guide and industry resource designed to attract recruits and promote career development in the government and community safety sector.

The national career resource, “Career Opportunities – What’s your plan?” highlights the many and varied career options, pathways and jobs available in the Correctional Services, Local Government, Public Sector, Public Safety and Water industries. The resource also provides helpful information to assist with career planning and presents profiles of people in successful careers who are working within the sector.

Apprentice Kickstart

Governor-General’s Indigenous Student Teacher Scholarships

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, recently announced the establishment of the Governor-General’s Indigenous Student Teacher Scholarship to assist one Indigenous student in every State and Territory to undertake Education studies at university.

Careers in Government Poster Now Available

An industry endorsed poster titled “Variety, Opportunity, Challenge. Careers in Government.” is now available which features a snapshot of the careers available within Government. The poster aims to encourage youth to think a bit differently about the Public Sector as it contains many more career pathways than they may think.

A newly developed resource is available that profiles ten women working in government and community safety, all of whom are thriving in non-traditional roles. This resource has been developed to be used by schools, CAA and industry to encourage young women to widen their perspective when investigating career directions and to showcase the versatility of careers within government and community safety.

In 2008 work commenced on the development of a new promotional resource for school based apprenticeships and traineeships within local government. This DVD is now available which features two short promotional segments that may be utilised by schools, CAA and industry to promote the uptake of this great initiative.

Students get hands-on in the trades

Students can try their hands at a trade, discover apprenticeship options, meet with course providers and get the answers direct from the people who hire and train apprentices at the Hands-On Expo.  It’s a knowledge hot-spot for students and school leavers wanting to establish a career in the trades.

Scholarships for Children of Veterans intending Tertiary Studies in 2010

In 2010 the Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) are expecting to give financial assistance for up to 65 students under many different scholarship schemes. All schemes help the selected children in need from the Australian veteran community, with the costs of tertiary education. Applicants are considered for all schemes for which they are eligible. Applications open on 18 August 2009.
